This programme was established within the Vocational School to educate well-equipped technical personnel for orthopedic prosthetics and orthotics departments, which are widely available throughout our country. In cases involving the loss of hands, feet or similar limbs, it is clearly important to educate professionals who are proficient in various techniques used in the production of artificial limbs, known as prostheses, which partialy perform the functions of the missing limbs, as well as assistive devices, known as orthoses, applied to body parts that require support, protection or correction for any reason. The rapidly increasing need for well-equipped technical personnel is becoming more evident each day. This programme educates healthcare technicians, namely Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Technicians, who are capable of meeting the need for qualified technical personnel. Within the scope of this programme, it is aimed to educate healthcare technicians who can produce prostheses capable of replacing the limbs and their functions for individuals who have lost their arms or legs for various reasons, as well as durable, aesthetic and functional orthoses designed to reduce pain, improve function, provide immobilisation, correction and support in pathologies involving the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
Prosthetics and orthotics technicians may work in the rehabilitation departments of university hospitals, public hospitals and private hospitals, as well as in related prosthetics and assistive-device workshops. They may also practise their profession by opening their own private workshops. There is a considerable need in our country for graduates of this recently established programme, which provides scientific education and training in prosthetics and orthotics, and graduates can find employment relatively easily. Graduates who successfully complete the associate degree programme and pass the Vertical Transfer Examination (DGS) administered by ÖSYM may transfer to bachelor’s degree programmes in Biomedical Engineering or Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation.
The curriculum of the Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Programme consists of courses that provide knowledge applicable at every stage of professional life. The principal courses include Mechanical Physics, Prosthetics I, Technical Drawing, Orthotics, Orthopedics, Kinesiology and Biomechanics, and Biomechanical Principles in Prosthetics. In addition to these courses, students also take Quality and Accreditation in Healthcare, Public Health, Neurology and Anatomy.
