In paralel with the increasing demand for eyeglasses resulting from the development of society, new retail companies have been established, and wholesalers of spectacle lenses and frames have emerged in a sector that is almost entirely dependent on imports. Renewal and development in every aspect of the sector began after the 1980s, and significant progress has been made in efforts to bring al levels of the sector, from production to retail and laboratory operations, up to the standards of developed countries. Accordingly, the Opticianry Programme was established at Nişantaşı Vocational School in line with developments around the world. By establishing this programme, it is aimed to provide educational opportunities that combine evidence-based medicine with current knowledge and modern technology in order to meet the workforce needs of the rapidly developing healthcare sector, particularly in our country. The aim of the programme is to educate healthcare personnel who will work in the field of opticianry. These professionals supply optical devices designed to correct visual impairments and ensure their proper application to patients. They sell prescription spectacle lenses, al types of contact lenses, spectacle frames, protective eyewear and sunglasses, or prepare eyeglasses in accordance with prescriptions. Graduates of the programme are awarded the title of “Optician.”
Before initiating the programme-opening process, our University consults with leading representatives operating in the relevant sector to ensure that internship and employment opportunities for students can be addressed quickly and sustainably. In this context, educational collaborations are established to ensure that the practical courses included in the programme are conducted with the support of sector representatives. This cooperation provides significant advantages to programme students. Graduates of this programme may work in the production and sale of eyeglasses or serve as responsible managers in opticianry establishments.
The Opticianry Programme includes courses such as Physics, Geometrical Optics, Optical Instruments, Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye, Business Mathematics, Medical Terminology, Eye Diseases, Professional English, Business Management, Software Applications in Opticianry, First and Emergency Aid, Professional Ethics, Computer Skills, Turkish Language, and Atatürk’s Principles and History of the Turkish Revolution. Students also complete an internship.
