The understanding that dentists and technicians work as a team during the production of dental prostheses has become well established in our country. Regulations have prohibited unqualified dental technicians from working and opening laboratories. Therefore, there is a significant need for Vocational School graduates in dental laboratories. Students who choose this programme receive intensive professional, theoretical and practical education for two years. Graduates of the programme receive the title of “Dental Prosthetics Technician.” Dental prosthetics technicians prepare models from oral impressions taken by dentists. Using these models, they shape fixed and removable partial dentures, reproduce them through casting, and make them suitable for use in the mouth by finishing and polishing them to provide an aesthetic appearance. They also repair cracked and broken dentures and prepare removable orthodontic appliances planned by the dentist during the treatment process.
Graduates of this programme may find employment in dental prosthetics laboratories established within public institutions such as public hospitals, dental hospitals and university hospitals, as well as in private-sector laboratories, private institutions and hospitals. In addition, graduates who take the Vertical Transfer Examination may complete a bachelor’s degree in Health Administration, Healthcare Institutions Management, Healthcare Institutions Administration or Health Management programmes. In accordance with the treatment planned by the dentist and professional principles, graduates carry out laboratory procedures for removable and fixed dental and maxillofacial prostheses using impressions, models and records obtained from the patient.
During the first semester, Dental Prosthetics Technology students take basic theoretical courses such as Head and Neck Embryology and Anatomy, Dental Morphology and Prosthetics. During the remaining three semesters, dental prosthetics technology is addressed as a whole through courses such as Ceramic Prostheses, Fixed Prostheses, Removable Prostheses, Maxillofacial Prostheses and Implant-Supported Prostheses. Students reinforce their fundamental knowledge through practical applications.
